ANZAC DAY
Today is a public holiday in Australia as we celebrate Anzac Day,(Australia/New Zealand Army Corp) we honour them...
AUSTRALIA'S oldest veteran, Peter Casserly, intends to lead today's parade, riding through Perth in an open-top Bentley Azure with two great-grandsons.Mr Casserly, 107, has been suffering from a heavy cold, but his son, Peter Jnr, said yesterday that his father hoped to join the parade, and the family would check his condition this morning.
Mr Casserly is the oldest of the three surviving World War I veterans - the others being Jack Ross, 106, and William Allan, 105, both of whom are too frail to take part in today's parades.
Mr Casserly, a former military railway engineer on the Western Front, first marched in 1920, but it took another 84 years before he could bring himself to attend another parade. Peter Jnr said his father, now confined to a wheelchair, blind and almost deaf, was frail. "He might just have to watch it on the television. We'll see how he is on the day, and see what the nursing home people say."
